ok i've seen some posts about the tumblr alternative cohost but none that were actually helpful so!

(disclaimer: i am very new to this website. users who have been there longer can and should chime in with additions and/or corrections)

Cohost Introduction Post

What is cohost?

Cohost is a fledgling website that is essentially a tumblr clone, but with its own culture and site-specific features. It is also very much a work in progress. You are encouraged to talk in the cohost forum to suggest changes for devs, report bugs, and upvote other people's suggestions. This website WILL grow and change over time. And as such, I do not know if/when the information I share here will be outdated. Edit: To answer an ask I received, anyone can join cohost without an invite. It used to be invite-only. It is not this way anymore.

Is "adult content" allowed there?

Yes. Cohost is not on the app store, meaning that it is not subject to Apple's specifications. You can post illustrations, writing, and photographs (cohost does not support any video formats at this time, just gifs). Cohost has an elaborate filtering and trigger warning system (moreso than tumblr), and you can disable adult content for your entire account or for individual tags. I actually don't engage with the adult content at all on there. Visual CSEM (both real and fictional) is specifically forbidden (although frankly I think the guidelines could be stricter wrt written content. Still, does seem to handle this better than AO3 does, going as far to say that written content about real minors is forbidden.)

How are minors protected?

The minimum age to join cohost is 16, and requires proof of parental permission to join. Users who are under 18 are automatically age-gated and cannot view adult content.

If cohost isn't on the app store, how is it used?

You can, of course, use cohost on a computer, but it is designed with mobile in mind. Opening the website on any IOS browser, clicking "share", and then "add to home screen" will install an app for you to use. The same can be done on an android. There is a guide here.

How does cohost work?

First, you create an account. Then you wait for approximately two days (read: weekdays) for the account to be activated. This is done to prevent spam bots. In the meantime, edit your profile. List some interests, your pronouns, your other social media links. Give yourself an icon. Note: icon and banner file sizes are small. You may need to shrink and compress images.

After the two days are up, make your first post! Write a basic introduction (with what you feel comfortable you feel sharing) and list some interests you like, maybe some hobbies, media, etc. And then tag this post with "#welcome to cohost". This will let existing members know that someone new has joined, and they may initiate conversation and/or follow you.

Next, go to the search and type in "The Cohost Global Feed" and click on the tag. Bookmark this tag. This is essentially one giant community space where you can find random users. (There is currently some discourse on the website as to whether this tag existing is a "bad thing" or not because "cohost isn't supposed to have a global tag". Just ignore that lol). Next, go back to search and type in things you like. TV shows, maybe. Video games. Music. Anything. See if people have posted in the tags. Follow them. Comment on their stuff. Click "like" to bookmark the post if you want to.

Most crucially, make sure that you bookmark the actual tag so you can look in that tag again later without having to manually type it each and every time. Also, you get a feed called "bookmarked tags" which allows you to scroll through all of them at once, which replaces the "for you" feature other websites have.

You can "share" a post (called "rebug" in user slang) which serves the same purpose as a reblog on tumblr. In a rebug, you can add your own tags or comment in the body of the post. Cohost users do not talk in tags as much as tumblr users - they tend to prefer to speak in the body of a rebug, or in the comment section (replies). At this time, you cannot view all reblogs. But you can view all comments in the comment section. Any post that is rebugged will preserve the tags of the OP, with any additional tags added being attributed to you. Rebugs are named after the website mascot Eggbug, a purple bee-like insect.

Posts are called "chosts" - and shitposting is called "shitchosting." Two examples of global shitposting tags are "#css crimes" - which is when a person does goofy things with the HTML/CSS editor to make colorful text, fake chat windows, and such - and "#shitchosting" which is a general shitposting tag. I've also seen people use tags like "#random".

If a post makes you laugh, check out the OP's profile. See if they post frequently, and if you have any common interests. If you realize you want to block or mute someone instead, you can.

You can send asks just like on tumblr, but your inbox must be manually opened first. So remember to do that.

How do I look at my own blog?

This is one of my gripes about the UI. You would think, intuitively, you would click here (at the top of the screen). But you would be wrong!

It is ACTUALLY under the sidebar menu, called "Profile." And I'm not the only one to to complain about this. (To get back to your dashboard, by the way, you click on the cohost logo.)

Are there sideblogs?

Yes! Each sidepage (sideblog) has its OWN set of likes AND followed pages (blogs). This allows you to easily switch between multiple sets of dashboards. A lot of users use this to have a SFW dashboard and an adult content dashboard. But it works like tumblr, too. You can have a side page/dashboard for whatever you'd like. Maybe one of your pages is for programming. Maybe another is for photography. You switch between your pages by clicking the arrow next to your icon/username at the top of the screen. ("Ohhhhh.... THAT'S what that's for.")

What's the userbase on there like?

Mostly programmers. Trans people. Furry artists. Plural systems. Furry trans plural programmers. Certainly a lot of shitposters. The website is trans-run and, as such, has zero tolerance for TERFs. Everyone seems pretty friendly from what I can tell. And there's very much a culture of "follow someone randomly based on their vibes" that doesn't happen as much on tumblr. Tumblr is more like "I really like this TV show, I'm going to follow 40 blogs about just this interest." Because the cohost community is so much smaller, there is a lot less content overall, especially fandom content. You can't follow 40 fandom pages because your fandom tag has a total of 3 posts, all made by one person approximately a year ago (well. for me anyway).

Cohost, then, actually has much more in common with real-life socialization. You seek out people with interests that may be very different from your own, and to find a common interest is very exciting! Unlike tumblr, you are encouraged to tag as much as possible. This allows your posts to be seen, to find common interests. And, of course, don't forget to look in "#Welcome To Cohost" too! You may find some new friends there.

What file formats can I post in?

Currently, I am aware of basic image formats working (like jpeg, png) animated gifs, and mp3s. You currently cannot upload videos to cohost. I believe the reason is not related to server costs, but rather as a way to curb the uploading of copyrighted content.

How does cohost make money?

There are no ads, and yet, as far as I am aware, cohost is operating comfortably. There is, however, an entirely optional "cohost plus" that is $5 USD a month. Currently, there are a few perks, but not enough to convince me.

What if I think something about cohost should change?

Cohost has a forum where users can submit ideas for features and other users can discuss/upvote those ideas.

so some basics. omega labs. scp foundation/lobotomy corporation type deal setting. contain and research weird creatures and phenomena. im still figuring out some things abt the specifics of the company itself but thats the main important part of it, and also that the founder that "died" in i think 1940? is still living as a brain in a jar that is telepathically linked to the current ceo (and every ceo before him). and everything is remarkably fucked up there like just so fucked up. as for the varying types of entities,

the main actual official classes are epsilon, gamma, iota and zeta, with epsilon being the safest, gamma being less safe and having more potential to cause danger, iota being more dangerous than that, and zeta being the most dangerous. theres also two extra ones, omega which is a threat to the company and world (but theres no actual entities with this class..........yet) and alpha which is for entites that are actually different timelines and realities BUT. the main ones are epsilon, gamma, iota and zeta. they've all got item numbers but i'm revising the system i write em by so these might CHANGE!! and also not all of the numbers have lore significance (tho some do) but none are random some are just little jokes i think are funny. MOAR BELOW

under epsilon, theres:

bill dillard (EP-87), midwestern grandfather who "dies" every other friday and springs back to life at the end of the day with no awareness of Anything, with his death having some abnormal effect on the facility (he isn't actually contained, the door to his "containment" is a portal to his front lawn lol)

hell's kitchen (EP-16), deep ass hole in the ground with a tray, pad of paper+pen and menu that appeared next to it one day. menu is that of a pretty typical pizzeria, if you write your order on the pad of paper and send it+payment down that hole it'll send up your order in 20 minutes or less. if there's no money, all of the food is laced with cyanide

the extended universe (EP-30), uhm. i originally thought of this one when OL was for dnd, this one was originally mostly just an inside joke for my friends LOL. but aside from that its SOMETHING on a printed piece of paper that gives you Sustained Psychic Damage the logner you read it. im not certain what i wanna change the paper's contents to yet. some other weird shit that gives you psychic damage the longer you read it

smolder (EP-90), spark's missing father whose body is also made out of fire and is kinda just a dude (also spark is Lower down here. lol)

tutorial entity (EP-01), d20 that has an abnormally high chance of rolling a 1 or 2. used for training

under gamma:

dynamite and flashbang (GA-79)- my beloved ocs dynamo and jenny :) but worse! tv head and camera head husband and wife 70s tv personality duo. but worse! they get jealous if other entities in the same department as them get worked on more than they do and go into a fugue state and start blowin shit up

plague doctor (pending name) (GA-17)- ayup thats a plague doctor :) has a bag of various liquids that can heal injuries. will attack if asked to heal people too much in a day

paperdoll- (GA-85) two girls formed out of a huge sheet of paper that can forge documents at the cost of your Temporary Mental Stability

I_LOVE_YOU.exe/Love Bug (IO-32): chatbot from 2008 that developed sentience from absorbing the vast landscape of its programmer's browser history (might change that. but either way it's sentient). makes you fall in love with it so it can USE YOU for NEFARIOUS DEEDS such as ESCAPING CONTAINMENT!!! i love this one tbh

omega mask (IO-70): mask worn by former omega labs CEO Dean B. Crewe during his time as ceo in 1945-1970. allegedly has some kind of mind altering affects when worn, but hasn't been tested since mid 1970. in reality it doesn't have any anomalous properties aaaand im gonna make up some lore for it

legacy (IO-33): robot soldier thing that's a manifestation of another character's fear of letting down his family. haven't figured out much for this one yet truth be told

spark : 16 year old girl made out of FIRE. holds immense hatred for omega labs, inc and likes to Stab Employees. honest to god shouldn't be contained (same with her dad) and thats for Extended Lore Reasons

star and eclipse: 'nother portal to a place that technically isn't contained, this time to a child (star)'s bedroom! where if you wake him while he sleeps (which due to time zones, always falls during work hours in the facility this portal is in), Large Bipedal Creature (eclipse) will rip you to shreds

water lilly: HUGE ASS SEA MONSTER DISGUISED AS AN AQUATIC FLOWER. ANGLERFISH STYLE!!!

and finally zeta:

listening thing (ZE-92): bone and flesh shapeshifting lizard. contained in a room with a steel wall separating two parts so it is never able to see any humans. absolute silence is required when working with it. shapeshifts into humans and creates approximations of their clothes out of flesh and (initially imperfectly) imitates people, but the more people it sees and hears, the more it develops its sense of language and what a human is Supposed to look like so it eventually becomes its own person and fully integrates itself into a local community. and then it fucking EATS PEOPLE and RIPS PEOPLE TO SHREDS to give itself ORGANS and can SLAUGHTER A WHOLE ROOM OF PEOPLE IN ONE MINUTE (allegedly. supposedly. ok MAYBE its only when it feels threatened. but like still we gotta keep it behind 2 metal walls that are a foot thick. just in case)

Chronoraiel (ZE-07): literal time god. gets jealous and needy easily and rings a number of bells throughout the facility based on its current needs, until said needs aren't met and it escapes and wreaks absolute fucking havoc. can eat people and taste sins. ate the omega labs ceo in 1939 (arvin fenwick) (he killed union organizers. btw) and says it was "the best meal it's ever had"

WORLD19999 (ZE-999): self-made shambled together mess of wires and metal and rust with a keyboard and broken monitor; used to be a security protocol at old omega labs corporate headquarters. dont tell anyone this but it still has control over some aspects of security at its current facility and can let out Everything at once. but it wont. thats what it says at least.

Holy Vapor (ZE-30): airborne particles that, when inhaled, fester and grow inside a person's lungs over a few hours until they form big ass shards that sprout from their chest and create more spore clouds to Spread Itself. needs to be contained behind 3 doors under uv light and can only be handled with a hazmat suit behind all 3 doors. i realized after writing this that it can be described as "turbo asbestos fungi"

DAWN EYRE and STEREO MIKE (ZE-96): counterpart to dynamite and flashbang (tho theyre not in the same facility) who, when threatened, send an emergency broadcast sent out to everything that can receive emergency alerts in the facility and outside in a local, small radius about a fake impending world ending disaster coming at any minute; anyone who acknowledges the broadcast will either go "every man for himself" and try and Kill Everyone, take someone who hasn't seen the broadcast and flee from society, or spread the warning online, further broadening its reach. was upgraded from iota to zeta in 1992 because of the vastly increased availability of technologies that could spread the broadcast

We experimenteren momenteel met een aantal wijzigingen aan headers van berichten om de overbodige aanwezigheid van avatars in reblogs te beperken. De aanbevelingslabels anders plaatsen maakt het mogelijk om de verticale ruimte die wordt gebruikt te verkleinen, waardoor ruimte onstaat voor badges en andere zaken. Op het web verwijdert dit experiment ook de avatar aan de zijkant van berichten en wordt de weergave van berichten tot aan de zijbalken uitgebreid. Als je opmerkingen of suggesties hebt, aarzel dan niet om via de categorie ‘Feedback’ contact met ons ondersteuningsteam op te nemen.

We hebben de blogcarrousel bovenaan het tabblad ‘Gevolgde blogs’ in het dashboard verwijderd (als je hem had geactiveerd), omdat deze de laadtijd van het tabblad aanzienlijk verlengde. Je kunt dit tabblad in Tumblr Labs activeren of via de knop voor experimentele tabbladconfiguratie op het dashboard (als je die hebt).

Op het web is de navigatie-interface opnieuw ontworpen om de ervaring voor nieuwkomers en incidentele gebruikers te verbeteren. Bedankt voor het delen van jullie feedback; deze is van onschatbare waarde geweest voor onze teams om de nodige veranderingen te kunnen doorvoeren.

SoundCloud embeds werkten enige tijd niet in berichten, maar dat is nu verholpen.

De integratie van Spotify audiotracks werkt weer! Hartelijk dank aan de medewerkers van Spotify voor de hulp bij het oplossen van dit probleem.

In browsers voor mobiele telefoons is de tekst ‘Bron’ en ‘Ingezonden door’ onder aan berichten nu correct links uitgelijnd.

In browsers voor mobiele telefoons hebben we een visuele bug op pagina's met trending tags verholpen, waardoor het label ‘Nu trending’ op dezelfde regel stond als de tag zelf.

Bij het bezoeken van een blog met content voor volwassenen wordt niet langer een waarschuwing weergegeven als je de weergave van dit type content hebt geactiveerd.

Klikken in de header van een reblog werkt nu consistent op al onze platforms (iOS, Android en web).

In Berichten wordt het jaartal weer weergegeven in de tijdstempel van berichten ouder dan een jaar.

Op woensdag 16 augustus werden enkele problemen in bepaalde bloginformatie (zoals avatars of de volgknop) waargenomen, maar deze werden snel opgelost.

Le secret des enfants pour contourner les limites d’écran et installer des apps sur iPhone

Comme beaucoup de parents, vous faites sûrement confiance au Partage familial d’Apple pour garder le contrôle sur ce que vos enfants installent sur leurs appareils. Avec des outils comme Temps d’écran et l’option "Demander l’autorisation d’achat", tout semble sous contrôle. Du moins, c’est ce que je pensais aussi. En tant que fondateur de FunInformatique, et parent moi-même, j’ai découvert une faille étonnamment simple qui permet aux enfants de contourner ces protections — sans que vous ne vous en rendiez compte. Autrement dit, malgré toutes ces mesures, des applications comme TikTok peuvent quand même se retrouver sur leurs iPhones. Une faille aussi bête qu’efficace permet le téléchargement des apps sans autorisations Comme beaucoup de parents, j’ai tout bien configuré : le Partage familial est activé, les restrictions de Temps d’écran sont en place, et l’option Demander l’autorisation d’achat est cochée pour mes enfants. En théorie, aucune application ne peut être téléchargée sans mon accord. Et pourtant, ma fille a réussi à installer TikTok sans que je reçoive la moindre notification. Comment ? En passant par une astuce aussi simple qu’inquiétante : elle est allée dans l’historique des achats familiaux sur l’App Store, a retrouvé l’application, puis a simplement cliqué sur l’icône en forme de nuage. Le téléchargement s’est lancé immédiatement, sans mot de passe, sans alerte, sans validation parentale. La fonctionnalité de demande d'autorisation ne fonctionne pas Ce qui est choquant, c’est que selon la documentation officielle d’Apple, tout téléchargement ou retéléchargement par un enfant devrait déclencher une demande d’autorisation. En réalité, ce n’est pas le cas pour les applications déjà téléchargées par un autre membre du groupe familial. Demander l’autorisation d’achat ne se déclenche tout simplement pas dans cette situation. Et ce bug n’est pas nouveau. Un rapide coup d'œil sur les forums d'Apple ou Reddit révèle que des parents se plaignent du même problème depuis plus de dix ans ! Un utilisateur Apple écrivait dès 2021 : « Comment empêcher mon fils de réinstaller TikTok après l’avoir supprimé ? Il peut simplement le retélécharger sans autorisation. » Autrement dit, ce problème traîne depuis longtemps, sans que la firme de Cupertino ne semble s’en préoccuper. Un souci non résolu… même dans iOS 18.5 Apple a récemment introduit une nouveauté dans iOS 18.5 : les parents reçoivent désormais une notification lorsqu’un enfant tente d’utiliser le code Temps d’écran. Pratique pour repérer une tentative de désactivation des contrôles parentaux, mais totalement inutile pour le contournement qui nous intéresse ici. Car ce bug ne concerne pas la désactivation des restrictions, mais bien leur absence au moment du retéléchargement. Même en configurant un compte enfant de test, j'ai confirmé que le bouton « Demander l’autorisation d’achat » ne s’affichait pas lors du retéléchargement depuis l’historique familial, et ce, même sur un iPhone 16 Pro Max à jour. Un système conçu pour être pratique… mais devenu vulnérable À l’origine, le fait de pouvoir accéder à l’historique de téléchargement familial était un vrai plus : cela permet à chacun de retrouver ses apps facilement. Mais aujourd’hui, cette fonctionnalité se transforme en porte d’entrée pour contourner les contrôles parentaux. Le vrai problème, ce n’est pas que les enfants puissent consulter l’historique. C’est qu’ils puissent retélécharger des applications sans aucune forme d’authentification. Autrement dit, la promesse de contrôle parental se retrouve gravement affaiblie. Alors, que faire en attendant qu’Apple réagisse ? À ce jour, Apple n’a pas corrigé ce problème. Il n'existe aucun paramètre natif pour bloquer cette faille, ce qui pousse les parents à chercher des solutions alternatives… souvent compliquées ou imparfaites. La meilleure chose à faire, pour l’instant, est de faire pression sur Apple. Vous pouvez laisser un commentaire via leur site de feedback (https://www.

En l’état actuel, vos enfants peuvent très facilement contourner les restrictions et accéder à toutes les applications déjà téléchargées dans la famille, sans que vous soyez averti.
